In the last 72 hours, America has witnessed a devastating wildfire situation develop in California. Watching the images of homes burning to the ground, families displaced, and lives turned upside down can leave us feeling helpless, hopeless, and fearful. It’s heartbreaking. It can be more difficult for our children, who may not fully understand why things like this happen. Whether our kids and students are directly affected by these tragedies, have loved ones who are, or are simply watching the news, the emotional impact can be significant.
You may be wondering, "How can I help my students and students begin to process what is happening?" As a counselor and a parent of four, I understand how difficult it is to witness our children’s heartbreak and concern about tragic events. We may not know how to help them. In these moments, offering support, stability, and reassurance is essential. Our kids and students are watching us. How we respond can significantly impact their hearts, minds, and emotional well-being.
Here are five practical tips to guide and comfort your kids and students during this difficult time:
Validate their feelings. Let them know feeling scared, sad, or confused is okay. Their emotions are real and should be acknowledged. Sometimes simply listening without judgment is the most comforting thing to do. Reassure them that God understands their feelings, and He is with them through every struggle.
Limit exposure to the news. While staying informed is essential, keeping the news off can help overwhelmed students.
Encourage acts of Generosity. Even if your child or students are not directly affected by the fires, they can still make a difference. Encourage them to participate by donating toys, clothes, or supplies needed in the coming days.
Stay connected with your faith community. Stay connected to faith-based community activities can provide everyone comfort and stability. Participate in prayer groups, attend church, or engage in community service acts to help those affected by the fire.
Pray together. The Psalmist reminds us in Psalms 116:2 (NLT), “Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” The God of the universe is leaning in to hear our prayers. When we invite our kids to pray for themselves and others, we remind them that He is loving and all-powerful. He brings help and healing in every situation.
As believers and followers of Jesus, we can lean on His promise of comfort and strength. Pslam 34:18 (NIV) reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
In these challenging times, we help our children manage their emotions by offering comfort, connection, and opportunities to serve others. No matter where they are or how they are impacted, God’s love is the anchor that will help them navigate through the storms of life. And as we model gratitude in the face of tragedy, we teach our kids to find hope in God’s goodness, no matter what.
